Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

10.26.08

What a magnificent day! It's sunny and lightly warm with a gentle breeze now and then.

We're at 6 brown eggs each and every morning with extras here and there. The Buffs don't lay as regularly as the RIR or the Rocks. and they don't use the nest boxes at all, preferring to lay on the ground or floor for some reason. The Buffs roost on the highest rung so I know they could easily get to the highest nest box but they won't even lay in the low ones. I did find one white egg, one time in the lower boxes.

I am quite positive now about who lays what. Mostly.... Between what I've seen, what I feel and what JJ told me, I feel positive that the Buffs lay the white eggs and people just call them brown because they're not snow white. Next to the actual brown eggs they look very white to me.

The Buff eggs are also bigger. I would say they equal a large egg compared to the small brown eggs. Our Aracuanas always had small eggs as well. I can't wait till they start laying so we can add blue and green to the rainbow :) I use the white larger eggs for baking and the brown eggs for eating and selling. Oddly, people who buy farm eggs don't want any white eggs. At least our customers don't.

I finally broke down and asked for help on getting the new henhouse straightened. We need 2 someones to help push it straight while 1 someone nails in the brace. But alas, the person has had a headache all weekend. My sister Becca did offer to help but she has to drive so far to get here, about 50 miles. I may take her up on it tho and pay her back with a fine meal and a basket of teas or something :)

Speaking of sisters ... I haven't talked to Pepper in ages. I've called, probably close to 20 times, but am never able to catch her. Maybe I'll try again today.

Todays menu is ... Breakfast - bread and strawberry jam with coffee. Dinner - roast, potatoes, carrots and onions with homemade bread and iced tea. Supper - leftovers. Dessert - chocolate cake and hot tea.

Well, the roast should be about done and we're starving so I'll be off to tend to that.

My friends here -- from whom we were getting eggs until their old hens went on strike (the young ones haven't started yet) said the same thing... their customers just want brown. In their minds brown = farm eggs and white = commercial eggs.

I have another friend who markets (less successfully, so it seems from anecdotal evidence) "forest free-range eggs" and his dozens are ALWAYS mixed. The dozen I bought this week from a local farm were also mixed, with some of the off-white colored ones and brown as well. They all taste the same. < g >
