Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

11.01.08 Merry November

How good and peaceful yesterday was :) We actually had very few visitors tho I was glad for those who did drop in.

We feasted on pizza and candies and root beer and watched Journey to the Center of the Earth. When you're surrounded with such good things like family and warmth and food, all is well no matter how silly the movie is :)

Nik is sleeping in this morning. He can whenever he wants to but he rarely does. It feels odd that he's not up, even tho he usually spends the mornings in his room. But all is well.

We had some needed rain. It stormed most of the day and will make the ground perfect for planting some wonderful black tulips I was given yesterday :) :) I actually never had tulips and don't know much about them but they're beautiful and I'll soon learn more. I think they bloom the first spring, unlike Iris who sometimes wait a year after planting before blooming. Maybe that's the difference of bulb and rhizomes ? Anyway, they're going in with the Iris tomorrow and next year there should be yellow, white, light purple and dark purple iris with black tulips mixed in :)

I spent much of the day going thru linens, sheets, tables cloths and the like, in the back-room/closet/laundry-room to make room for some other things and clean out what we no longer need so that someone else might benefit from it.

I started earlier in week, going thru my clothing, trying things on, reorganizing, changing summer and winter clothes around. I also made room for the candle making bin and the soap making bin. I don't use them as often as I do other things so they don't need to stay in the kitchen under my work table.

The work table is next after I finish with the backroom. I'm going to try and figure out a way to move all the juju side things and use that space for the Herbals and teas so that I can have the Hoosier as space for baking and such.

I also got some more sewing done yesterday and finished 1 pillow case and 1 pillow and a tote bag. The pillow I made is a draft pillow for Nik's bed, made from an old pair of dragon pants. It's about 12 inches around and a little over 5 feet long. He has an old draft pillow along the wall but it's to small and has to have several small pillows to fill in. this one should fit perfectly except for a space at the top where he keeps a special pillow.

I'm going to be remaking my own draft pillow, which stays at the head of my bed but get pushed down some nights so I'm going to add some tabs to hold it in place.

A draft pillow is a long, fairly thin pillow used to keep the drafts out, like a very long roll pillow. They can go wherever you need on the bed, against a cold wall or at the head or foot board.

Another good thing to have to keep the cold out is a four poster bed. Nik has one that I designed for him several years ago. I intend to make myself one as well, eventually. They really are very good to have if it gets to cold. Just hang some heavy cloth or blankets from the rails and drape one over the top and before long you're as toasty as a cat by a fire.

Todays menu is Oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins for breakfast. Stew made with the left overs from the roast and homemade bread for dinner. Eggs with onions, peppers, potatoes and cheese in pitas for supper.

Blessed day !
