Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

Merry Ostara & Easter !

It's a beautiful day out ! Even with almost no sleep at all.

Yesterday, when Nik lifted the tarp to get hay for the goats, he found two tiny new kittens. One was clean, dry and fine, the other one had been just born, it hadn't been cleaned and it's cord not cut. Thing 2 is the mother, a feral cat who loathes humans. I cleaned the new baby just so it could breath, we got the hay we needed, covered the babes back up and made prayers she would come back to them. We checked about 30 minutes later and the feral hussy had taken the older babe but not the wet one I cleaned. We covered and waited 30 more minutes but nadda.

I think she left it because I had touched it. That actually doesn't happen that often in real life but it can and in this case, did.

It had been a little over an hour so I brought the babe inside, cut it's cord, cleaned it warmed it and fed it. It was so cold, i was afraid i had waited to long. but all it needed was some heat and food. That was yesterday afternoon and it's still doing wonderfully, eating perfectly and full of excellent kitten wick :)

Not at all what I would have asked for from the strange giant Easter Bunny, but a blessing just the same :)

I enjoy reading your blog. I have had to rescue a few kittens myself and my sister who works at a Wildlife Rehab Center taught me to put rice in a sock, heat it up in Microwave and it becomes a warmer for babies. I leave it in next to babies for them to snuggle up against. I even use rice/sock warmer for chick transport.
