Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

Beautiful day, lots to do.

The lawn mower stopped working the other day so there may be a Missouri jungle waiting for our family coming Saturday. It's already to my waist in a few spots *o* I'm going to try again today, maybe it was just wet or condensation which has evaporated. we'll see anyway.

Later I have to run into town to renew a license and while there we may get to pick up some more doors for the greenhouse, that probably won't get started until next year. On the way we'll hopefully be delivering a rooster (((((((((((Red)))))))))))) we'll miss him, he's very sweet, but we don't keep roosters with the hens because we don't eat fertilized eggs.

Eventually, when I get the greenhouse built and at least part of the garden fenced, I'll keep a rooster and let him live in the garden and greenhouse, with some rabbits maybe.

The chicken pen was so much quieter and more peaceful without the male ducks gone. They were good and beautiful ducks but just to much for our tiny homestead. We decided to try and just keep the 3 females. They seem much calmer and their eventual eggs can help feed them. I do love the sweet quaking and watching them in the pond :)

I was thinking the otherday about seeing if we could turn an old sliding glass door into a roof or roof section of the henhouse and greenhouse. I know they're tempered but I wonder if they would be strong enough to withstand golfball size hail. with the changes in weather we get hail much more then we ever did in the past. Probably not worth the chance since the storm continue to strengthen and all. I'll have to think on it some more.

Merry day everyone :)

Just in case this is valuable info - I got some condensation in my generator last month, and my neighbor turned me on to this stuff in a little red bottle called Heet or something or other. It's alcohol based, and about two bucks for a little bottle. I had gotten a little condesation wet in the gas tank through the little vent holes (or something), and a teaspoon of this fixed it right up.

Have fun with the fam!

That's a great idea, getting a rooster to live in your fenced in yard. Rabbits are wonderful as well.

Thanks to your post I checked to see if there a any freecycle in our area..... There are three equally in distance from us. I offered our old wood stove and it was gone within two hours yesterday. I was still getting e-mails about it today. I love it! It went to a couple that is having trouble getting their landlord to put a new furnace in for them. They have a place for the wood stove so at least now they will have heat if the landlord doesn't come through on the furnace. I felt good as they drove away with the woodstove in the back of their truck.
