Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

What an excellent day !

It's pretty cold out and this morning there were snow flurries ! The day is a wonderfully wintery gray day :) the cold wind blowing, the cats gathered in little cat clumps, the hens all puffed up, a fire burning warmly in the woodstove, a cup of hot tea steaming away beside me. What a grand life we're blessed with.

We had to run to town for catfood and a very few other things. Who can afford more these days. A man in the line beside us was getting about 30 cans of cat food and I worried that he might be eating them. I didn't know what to say and only smiled at him and made silent prayers that he would have everything he needs and at least some of what he wants.

It felt odd at the store, like everyone was in a daze. No one was really rude but certainly very few people were actually friendly. I'm one of those people and other folk stare at. They have all my life and friends and family have even noticed it. I always blamed it on my wild hair but I really think it's more then that. Some strange natural occurring mojo that emanates from me ? Or it could be that I'm very odd, dress oddly, act oddly and look oddly. Nah, couldn't be ! :)

Todays menu is .... Pitas stuffed with eggs, ham, cheese, peppers and onions. Peanutbutter n Jam sandwiches with spearmint tea for lunch. frenchtoast with hot tea for supper.

Well, I need to tend the fire and put the hens up and feed the outsiders their second meal. I hope everyone is always warm and well fed :)

Oh ! OC, yes we do keep our ducks and chickens together. We had another duck before these, a different kind, who we had for years and she always lived with the hens. Everyone gets on fine and seems happy and healthy. Some hens even share the floor nests with the ducks. These were all raised together from babies, that would make a difference. But Clover, our other duck, came to us as an adult with a hurt leg and our grown hens then accepted her right away.

Your morning sounds so cozy and snug. I think people stare because they sense the beauty and uniqueness of your presence.

Thanks for the letting me know about the duck/chicken housing. This gives me something to consider. There's nothing like the heat from a wood stove. That's our only source of heat and it's marvelous. I don't know what's going on with the weather here, this past few days it's been +16C. Amazing for this time of year. I'm loving it though, lol

what a great visual given in the first paragraph. nice and cozy. "cat clumps" makes me laugh. i've seen a few on my street lately.

i can recall being in a similar situation at the grocery store once. everyone was just moving along..there physically but not really present spiritually. ironically this was during a time when the sun hadn't appeared for nearly 3 weeks.

i'm sure you've a a natural aura that just attracts people. people will *say* it's the outer appearance, but i think it's something more. :-)
