Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

12.14.08

It's 7am and it already looks like the sun is up tho I think it's the spectacular moon. The wind is amazing. It's been windy for a few days now but the real wind started yesterday and hasn't ceased at all. In the forest I can see 60 foot trees dancing it. Every windchime is singing and the last of the leaves have been graciously blown from the paths. I so love the wind.

To my dismay, two of the Aracuanas have turned into cockerals. We've named them Zeus and Archimedes. They're very beautiful and I would like to keep at least one but I haven't decided yet. It means building another pen quickly because we don't eat fertilized eggs and the pen can't wait until spring.

I'm off to make a big pot of oatmeal for breakfast and start a small roast in the crockpot for later.

Blessed day all :)

This must be a really big wind, because it is just as amazing here in east central OK. I love the wind also, but it has ruined my plans for cutting a huge cedar tree for our Christmas tree. I had hoped to have a decorated tree for my husband when he returns from Korea on Thursday. We'll just wait a few days and have the entire family out cutting - regardless of the weather. That will be the 22nd! We'll have a big party and it will probably turn out much better than my doing it alone. Things always work out, don't they?

our weather is just too warm for winter. Can't wait till it turns cold and stays that way. We have several extra roosters. I let them run free instead of putting them in the pen with my hens. I have one pen John Henry is in with a few girls. I am enjoying the new pens and can't wait for the others to be finished. Have a great day Juli!

Sometimes the wind makes the tall trees dance here as well. It's a wonderful sight to see them swirling around to the music of the wind.
You had a question about the suet feeders...I buy the suet blocks but I often make up my own stuff as well for the net bags and one of the suet feeders. I'll mix up oatmeal, breadcrumbs, raisins, chopped apple, anything really that the birds might like. Then I pour on some oil and a bit of water to make it stick together. The birds seem to really like it.

Juli,

I will be selling a bull calf or a 2 yr old black half-tame bull. One of the guys will have to go for sale or freezer. Think about it.

I like the wind, too... and here on our hill it seems to blow a LOT! It does appear, though, that it is the wind that had been causing the pipes to freeze, as we were somewhere between 6 degrees and 0 the other night and they made no attempt to freeze... either that or the heat tape is on the same circuit as the hot water heater, which does not make sense... but knowing this place could very well be the case, as I left the water heater on last night just to see just as a precaution. We have snow and frozen rain over it, frozen and crusty, on the ground here, so hard that even K at over 200 lbs does not break through walking on it.

yeah, the wind is great, and we've been getting a lot lately as well.

for the past month or so i was on an oatmeal kick. it started out as an effort to gain a little weight. (i normally just eat fruit in the morning and figured i'd add a grain to fatten me up some). in the process i really got hooked and remembered how much i used to like it as a child with raisins, honey, and cinnamon. yum!

i had to cut back some, though, cause i think i was having some sort of reaction to overdoing it. there were times when i'd eat all throughout the day with pure satisfaction.

We've had the heavy wind off and on since Friday. It's blown the rain in... which we really needed. There is supposed to be a winter storm warning for us today and into the night bring rain, ice and snow. I love snow but I worry about ice on the branches, etc. and causing electric to go off. We had a bad ice storm about 7? years ago and you can still see trees in the woods that were brought down.
That roast sure sounds good for a cold day. You and Nik keep warm (((Hugs)))
