Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

The wind came again last night. Howling like a great widowed spirit looking for her lost lover. Searching under every leaf and between every crack and crevice. Rattling every window and door, wondering if he might be behind one. Each night she comes I open the door to let her in, so she can see that he's not here. But each night she comes still, to look again. Maybe she's just come to visit us, in need of company and likes our tea and cakes. Maybe she has found her lover and he lives here afterall, unseen to us but felt by her. I just don't know and I wonder if she'll come again tonight.

We slept in again, til almost 8:00. It's much chillier today than yesterday. yesterday we had the windows open a while and it was over 60, today it's just under 30 deg but very bright and sunny.

I've felt a bit run down for a few days but feeling much better today. It's a good thing because I have a lot to do this week.

We lost an Aracuana hen day before yesterday. I have no idea what could have happened to her. We did find her limping when we put them up the evening before she died. I looked her all over and couldn't find a mark anywhere. Her leg was visibly injured and the bones felt fine. The next morning her spirit was gone and only a stiff shell body remained. We returned her shell to the Mother. I hope she didn't suffer and it was not an illness that the others might catch. I'm watching them all closely.

The rooster, Archimedes, is growing quickly and is quite beautiful and sweet. I really want to try and keep him so along with everything else this week we have to build him a small pen with house. at least good enough to make it to summer when we'll be rebuilding the henhouse as well.

We had a most excellent Christmas ! Nik got a game system, game and book from his father. Some games, book, booklight, flashlight, umbrella and flute music CD from me and the animals. I got a most wonderful garden cart that I've been drooling over for ages :) and some fine candies and little tools.

My dear friend sent us a wonderful Christmas care package filled with fine chocolates, books, soap, candle, CD's, rice bowls and good foods :) It was truly the best care package I've ever seen.

Todays menu is ... Egg, ham and cheese on an english muffin for breakfast. Ham salad sandwiches for lunch. White beans and cornbread for supper. Applesauce and hot tea for dessert.

Merry day all !

It grieves us when we lose a hen too. It's difficult to understand when they seem well then go so suddenly.

Your Christmas sounds like a happy day, and your menu for today sounds as delicious as usual Stay warm!
