Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

I almost feel guilty that the day is so beautiful here when there are so many people with harsh weather. So far it's been a very warm winter, 60 deg weather in January, almost no ice or snow yet. That could all change very quickly but for today the sun is shinning bright and the day is calm.

Last night the moon was amazing. I'm sure she will be tonight as well. I have a me memory, at least it feels like a memory, of being alive ages ago when the moon was much larger everynight and red, almost always red. The Moon was so large it filled the sky at night and it seemed if we reached just a little further we could ouch it. In the memory there were men women and children and we wore hides and our skins were painted red with clay.

Anyway :)

I have been spending a lot of time working on my new website HealingHouseTeas.com I worked day and night for a few days to get it up and now just add a bit at a time. and also work on promoting it.

The time not spent on the website has been spent catching up on things pushed aside for those days.

We've been working on getting a sawbuck or woodhorse built. I found a picture of one I could copy and am making the main parts, the two big X's out of some landscape timber I got for 1.00 each a few years ago. I'm going to bolt the two X ends and then use scrap lumber to hold them together since that part will likely get cut into anyway over time. Hopefully the two big X's will last forever :)

I spent a good part of yesterday making Breakfast Quiche's. I'll post my recipe and some pictures later. I got the idea and original recipe from Phill and changed it to work for me :) I made 3 of them and froze 2.

I also prepared some apples to freeze ( I have several more still to do) and made a blueberry pie.

I cleaned and organized the freezer too. I try to keep a list of what we have and mark off what I use so notning gets wasted. And it's easier to decide what to make and to set up menus.

which is on the list to do today. Make the weeks menu.

I also have to make up some tea orders and work on getting Valentine/Lupercalia Lover's teas ready. I'm waiting on an order of tea bags so that i can make another batch for the day spa.

I'm trying to be more organized ( Normal) this year so that i can be ready and ahead for events and things. I don't keep time or dates well and generally miss shows and markets and holidays because I never know what day it is *~* But, this year i have a notebook !

Our current poultry people count is
1 Aracuana Rooster
5 Barred Rock Hens (all laying)
4 Rhode Island Red Hens (all laying)
8 Buff Orpington Hens (most laying, some just starting) they don't seem to mature as quickly as the Rocks or Reds.
9 Aracuana Hens (none laying yet)
1 Very Old Hen (about 6 years old and may or may not be laying)
3 Duck Hens (all laying but not daily)

We average 12 to 14 eggs a day, not counting duck eggs.

The very old hen's name is Hen.
The Rooster's name is Archimedes (I had a fish named Archimedes but he died and it seemed like a name that should be used)
The head hen's name (one of the Barred Rock) is Queen
The one white hen, an Aracuana, is Stark
and the Ducks names are Lilly, Lola and Lizzie
the others don't really have names yet.

Oh, and I want to say that all the people who may have trouble because of the new lead laws and handmade things, I'm very sorry and making jujus that it works out well for everyone for whom it should work.

Merry days !

your days are so productive. i really admire that.

i'm always amazed by the moon. i can recall feeling a similar way as a child..like it was just *right there*, and if i were able to fly like a bird then i could go right to it. it still astonishes me. sometimes so hugh-looking. other time so small.

(though i've learned that this is a trick of the eye or something)
