What an amazing day ! It's cold out, in the low 30's but, the sun is shinning brightly and the air is filled with hope and promise.
I never thought to see today happen in my lifetime. I'm sorry to say I've never had much faith in humanity. The life of an abused kid and all that. But things indeed do change and lately I've been given reason to have more hope and more faith in the goodness of humans then ever before in my 45 years.
Today is a very good day and I am honored to be apart of it. More so, I am beyond words that it could happen at this time in Nik's life. That he can witness it and understand it's meaning, it's truth, it's power.
We've had much to do lately and not getting it all done. Non of it much of a worry except for getting more wood cut down. It seems like the last 2 winters the wood is burning up quicker with less heat. It still doesn't take much to warm the house and the house holds the heat well. but it does take more wood then it did the years before, almost twice I think. Odd.
A few nights ago I was awakened by some squawking and when we went out to check we discovered a young possum in Archimedes pen. I think the poor possum was in more danger from the rooster then the other way around. It wasn't very old or experienced and Archimedes has gotten quite large and fierce looking. We got Archimedes out and put him with the hens for the night and then had to get to poor possy out because he got stuck.
The next mornings eggs went to the animals and we built a better temporary pen for Archimedes. An even better pen will come soon but I think this is good for now. He's safe anyway.
I've had several people ask why I don't just keep him with the hens and the answer is, we don't eat fertilized eggs. To each their own but I don't kill or eat any babies of any kind.
My fingers are much better ! they still hurt if touched but they don't hurt constantly and the tips aren't numb. You can hardly see any of the bruising at all. I don't know if it has to do with the lupis or not but I have always been blessed to heal quickly. Thank The Maker & Mother.
I've been working on my garden list and set up. I actually worked on it for weeks into the fall and here and there along the way. but lately I've been more at it. I love all the seasons but I so love the growing times. I get plants here and there but my favorite seed place is RareSeeds.com
I'm changing the layout of the veggie garden this year and I think it will almost double the growing area. Plus each year I till a little more to add more gardening space. Got to be careful for phone and power lines tho !
We've been going back to bed in the mornings after first chores. We started it when it was so very cold so that we could warm up but we're still doing it. Getting up to water and feed and let out the hens and then racing in and back to bed to warm and sleep 2 or 3 more hours.
Earth Heart posted about what's on her fridge here and I think it's a very cool thing. The fridge says a lot about a person and I truly enjoyed learning more about her. I'm going to be posting mine shortly as well :)
And now for some fabulous news ! We have green eggs !!! I so love green eggs, it's been one of my greatest goals since childhood to have green eggs n ham. Almost all our original chickens laid green eggs. i was careful to always barrow an Aracuana rooster to keep the green eggs coming. We had a few brown layers but only 2 or 3 out of 7 or so hens. Then the dogs killed all the green eggers and we were left with only browns, which we were very thankful for. but we haven't had green eggs in years ! And now we do :) :) :)
We found the first 3 just 2 days ago and had green eggs n ham right away. Eventually we'll have 9 green eggers and I'm keeping Archimedes for more later. I wish i had kept Red as well, he was the Rhode Island Red rooster. but I gave him to a neighbor and I think she ate him *~*

Two green eggs
Just like the brown eggs the green eggs come in varied shades of bluish green, dark green, vivid bright green and a brownish green. Sometime speckeled, sometimes not. It depends on their diet.

The sizes also vary a lot. The size depends on breed, age and individual hen.
Green eggs average medium size as do the darker brown layers.
The light brown and white layers average large to extra large. I find that the Buff Orpingtons
(who I have determined for sure lay the light brown *~*) also lay the largest eggs. hens just starting to lay usually lay fairly small eggs.

One of the comments from Homestead.org was that a hen stays fertile for up to 2 weeks after just one breeding. Just an fyi because of your preference. tracy
wow. my first time laying eyes on a green egg.
i love the growing season as well, although i haven't been too successful at growing a whole lot. but i do have a red pepper plant as well as a mint plant that are both currently growing strong! next weekend i'm gonna be working on starting a veggie (container) garden.
