Wild Moon Cottage is a small working homestead in the pristine Ozark Mountains. We have dairy goats, poultry, organic herb and vegetable gardens, a start of a tiny fruit orchard, several black walnut trees, wild berries and fields of wildcrafting goodness. We raise our own milk, our own eggs, much of our own medicine and food. I do laundry by hand, make my own vinegar, candles, soap, bread, cheese ........ For a living I am an artist and herbalist. My goal for myself and our homestead is to be as self sufficient and self sustaining as possible.

Sawdust Toilets & Generators

It has been a bit muggy today. the rain is nearby and I so hope we get some.

Today was spent working in the yard, cutting back things to prepare them for moving, deciding on a few things (whether to take or not).

I have no idea where we'll be going but there is no doubt that we will be going. The 3 room guest cottage on 1.5 acres is looking good altho we haven't seen it yet and there are so many things to get worked out even if we love it and the seller will sell to us, which i feel pretty sure about on both counts. Starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing all week I have many phone calls to make. I loath talking on the phone so much! For one thing it's hard to do anything while you're on the phone. Anyway, it has to be done.

I have a list of things to get before we move, if we take that particular place, to make the life easier until other things can be done. Some of these things may just continue with improvements. The current list

*A sawdust toilet - which Nik can build. There is an outhouse but winter and nights ...
*A larger water container - we have a large trough and four 55 gal barrels but they deliver 1,000 gallons and I would like to be able to hold that much.
*A gas generator - that will power a full size fridge and the computers (work and school)
and/or
*A battery bank and solar panel - possibly to power the computers and small things so the generator can be left for just the fridge. It may be possible that a large enough set up could also power the fridge but I'm not sure.

At least the first 3 things. The toilet is no problem and I'll post the directions soon. But for the rest, I really need to sell the cabin soon. I would also like to rent a large U-haul truck so that we don't have to make many trips, if I can at all budget for it. To save the wear on the Blazer. It's about 90 miles one way from here to the 3 room cottage. I will also lose business during the move and hope to be able to have at least 2 extra months payments put back.

We have a good amount of wood for the winter altho I imagine that anyplace will use at least double what we use here in the earthberm. Still, we have a good start on wood and the tools and skills we need to get more.

As far as animal housing, we have that ready. A huge, well made (I made a big part of it alone) doghouse that both goats fit in with room to spare. And our small chick pen which we got last summer from freecycle. it has room for up to 10 hens in the little house with attached small yard. These are just to have ready there and will see them through the winter should they have to. The plan is to also bring their current houses and set them back up but with only 30 days ( I will probably know how long for sure tomorrow - trial day) we may run out of time on getting everything moved.

I did consider selling all the goats and starting over later but I think they're also worth the extra work to keep so that we'll have plenty of milk through the winter. The downside of that is that i will definitely be milking in a tarp barn all winter long because any work will go to setting up the larger animal housing.

Many things to think about and consider and I don't even have a placed secured yet. I know it seems crazy and to most people it probably is but I know that things will work and be fine again. I have been in much worse situations with much less and things have a way of always finding their right balance.

For now tho, preparing for tomorrow, a little more packing and a chicken roasting in the oven on a bed of potatoes, carrots and onion.

I'm constantly amazed at your grace and composure. You are right, though, things do have a way of working themselves out -- I have experienced that time and time again in my life. Hoping your day goes smoothly tomorrow.
